The Massachusetts Cultural Council, nationally recognized as a leader among state cultural agencies, seeks an Executive Director to lead the Agency as it advances its program goals in the years ahead and maintains its reputation as a leader in its field. The position calls for a seasoned administrator of vision and integrity who is talented at inspiring consensus and can work in partnership with all levels of stakeholders to carry out the mission of the Agency and its current five-year strategic plan. Working closely with a 30-person staff and an active 19-member Board of Directors, the new Executive Director will be expected to build upon the Agency’s track record of innovative service to the Commonwealth. In addition to providing strategic and operational leadership, the Executive Director will meet regularly with the media, legislators, budget analysts, and other staff members from the Executive or Legislative branches, keeping them well informed about the work of the Council. In addition, s/he will be expected to maintain and deepen the Agency’s partnerships within the field, including partnerships with the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities and the New England Foundation for the Arts, as well as local communities, educators, and artists. The new Executive Director will play a critical role in shaping the future of one of the nation’s premier state cultural agencies. A strategic and visionary leader, s/he must possess the public presence and political savvy for this highly visible role. The ideal candidate will have an affinity for and preferably extensive experience in the state art agency field, as well as a passion for and knowledge of the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
