Public art review

A major review of public art has been commissioned by the Arts Council of Wales. Public art consultancy RKL has been appointed to undertake the review – to run from February to April – which aims to assess the current situation regarding public art activity and to identify potential areas for development. Independent consultant Graham Roberts, in addition to Axis Chair Doug Sandle, academic Trudie Entwistle and public policy specialist Dr Ian Strange, will make up the review panel. Issues to be examined by the reviewers include the current distribution, uses and applications of public art in Wales, and the cultural, social and economic contribution of public art both locally and nationally. The survey will also highlight models of good practice and examine the potential role of public and private sector bodies for the future development of public art. Project leader Graham Roberts said that the panel hoped to work closely with the public art sector. ‘We would like to hear from artists, architects, planners, commissioning bodies and any other interested parties who might like to contribute their views to the survey and the strategy for development,’ he commented.
