The National Endowment for the Arts is launching new resources to assist practitioners who are working on arts-based community development projects. These resources will assist those practitioners to develop projects that are authentic, equitable, and that augment existing local assets.

The OAS Executive Secretary for Integral Development, Sherry Tross, noted activities carried out over the past two months, including the Sixth Meeting of Ministers and High-level Authorities of Culture, held in Haiti from August 12 to 13, in which countries agreed to the exchanges of experiences to support public policies that encourage cultural entrepreneurship, and to encourage the design of cultural programs that contribute to the development of local communities with social inclusion and innovation.
Based on a two-year research process, this study attempted to gain a better understanding of how residents engage with the arts at a community level, explore barriers to arts access, and identify ways to strengthen local arts engagement. The studys 17 researchers made 300 connections including interviews, focus groups, and surveys with 191 residents, artists, arts groups and social service organizations in three Toronto neighbourhoods: Malvern, St. James Town, and Weston Mount Dennis. Each of the neighbourhoods has a significant number of children and youth and a relatively high proportion of new immigrants. Because of their socio-economic challenges, these neighbourhoods have been targeted for community development initiatives.
