American President George Bush has announced the nomination of Earl Powell III to serve on the National Council for the Arts (NCA), the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Powell, who is the Director of the National Gallery of Art, has had a distinguished career in the arts sector, previously holding the post of Director at the Los Angeles County Museum, and curatorial positions at the National Gallery and the University of Texas. He currently serves as a trustee of the American Federation of the Arts, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the White House Historical Association, and is a member of various arts organisations throughout the US. The NCA advises the NEA Chairman on policies, programs, and procedures for carrying out the agency's functions, duties, and responsibilities. Powell's nomination will be reviewed by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Once confirmed, he will replace Townsend Wolfe III, Director and Chief Curator of the Arkansas Arts Center, on the council, for a term that expires in 2006.
