The Scottish Arts Council (SAC) has helped to fund the preservation of the Scot language, by providing GB£107,500 to a combined organisation, dedicated to conserving the language from earliest medieval times to present day.
The Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue and the Scottish National Dictionary Association have combined their expertise and research to form the Scottish Language Dictionaries, which will see the contents of both dictionaries preserved electronically by the University of Dundee, and will be available to scholars and historians world-wide.
The recently completed The Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue, covers the Scots language from earliest times until the 1700's. The continuing collection of written and spoken Scots by the Scottish National Dictionary Association includes the Concise Scots Dictionary, first published in 1985.
Scottish Language Dictionaries received a GB£27,500 grant from the SAC for its establishment costs and a further GB£80,000 to meet its core cost for 2002/03. The electronic Dictionary of the Scots Language is supported by an Arts and Humanities Research Board Grant of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
