The Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) has recently announced the three recipients of the 2002 Theatre for Young Audience Prizes, as part of its ongoing effort to sustain and promote artistic initiatives geared towards youth. Worth $10,000 each, the prizes provide annual acknowledgment of exceptional theatre productions for young audiences, and were awarded in partnership with associations that currently administer theatre prizes in the three largest cities in Canada: la Soiree des Masque, Montreal; Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, Vancouver; and the Dora Mavor Moore Awards, Toronto. The plays Pacamambo by Wajdi Mouawad, produced by l’Arrière Scène (Beloeil, Quebec), One in a Million by David Holman, produced by Green Thumb Theatre for Young People (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Danny King of the Basement by David S. Craig, produced by Roseneath Theatre Company (Fergus, Ontario) received the awards. Jean-Louis Roux, Chairman of the Canada Council, has congratulated the recipients, noting that 'their work with young audiences is extremely important, since they make young people aware of and receptive to dramatic creativity.' 'Young audiences are a priority at the Council', he says, remarking that the prizes will aid in improving the visiblilty and acknowledgment of such theatre among the general public.
