A project for a cultural complex dedicated to the millions of Africans who were victims of slavery has been relaunched in Senegal. The Gorée Almadies Memorial has been designed by Italian architect Ottavio Di Blasi. If sufficient funds are acquired, it will include a pier connected to Gorée Island, where slaves left for America; an art museum; a centre for research into slavery; a large entertainment hall; and a promotion centre for the African patrimony. According to Amadou Lamine Sall, Coordinator of the memorial project: ‘The president of Senegal has always left open avenues for the creation of the memorial, one of the most important cultural projects in Africa.’ The international commission has begun collecting funds for the project.
