Thomas Reley, new American ambassador in Rabat, recently conducted his first official visit to Tangier, where he christened the latest projects to benefit from the ‘Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation’; diplomatic funds directed at cultural assistance to Morocco. Already, the fund has been used to restore the public square and establish a US partnership with Tangier’s festival of Jazz, Tanjazz. The ambassador stressed that cultural support to other nations remains a priority for his government, explaining, ‘the preservation of culture is an opportunity to present a different face of the United States, one which is neither commercial, political nor military.’ During his stay, Reley also spoke with local businessmen about the free trade agreement currently in negotiation between Morocco and the United States. The diplomat assured city entrepreneurs the agreement would pave the way for positive exchange between the two nations, and resulting opportunities would lead to better overall living conditions for Morocco.
