READING HABITS, ASSISTANCE TO LIBRARIES AND BOOK CONSUMPTION IN COLOMBIA

Released by Colombia’s Minister of Culture Elvira Cuervo de Jaramillo on December 14, Reading Habits, Assistance to Libraries and Book Consumption in Colombia is the result of an agreement by various institutions dedicated to the promotion of literature and reading to include a module on reading habits and book consumption in a 2005 Household survey of the Statistics National Administrative Department (DANE). Ten researchers analysed the survey results under the following subjects: - A comparative perspective between surveys conducted in 2000 and 2005 - Reading of Internet information, newspapers and magazines in Colombia - Assistance to libraries throughout the country - Reading in primary schools, middle schools and high schools - A general report on reading habits and book consumption throughout the country - A special report on reading habits and practices in the main cities of the country - Information on children’s preferences regarding the reading of texts to children out loud, the person who reads to them, and the places where reading takes place - Information on reading in libraries and the location of libraries - A report on the impact of the national plan for the promotion of reading and the construction of libraries on the number of books read by Colombians - A comparative perspective of reading habits and book consumption in Colombia and other countries. Among the researchers are Germán Rey, Richard Uribe, Mary Giraldo, José Alberto Guerra, Mauricio Pérez, Mauricio Reina, Cristina Gamboa, Sergio Iván Prada, Liliana Velásquez, Ana Roda, Carolina Castro, Juan Felipe Parra, Oscar Julián Corzo, and Carmen Barvo.
