The goal of The Law Portal is to present legal primers – relatively brief summaries of the law for non-lawyers - on matters that affect the arts, artists, and arts institutions in the USA. The materials have been created by a wide variety of non-profit organizations, government entities, and for-profit businesses. The site was created by Sandra Braman at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation.
Materials are organised into 6 main areas:
- Overviews of the range of issues of importance
- Laws and regulations that affect how art is made
- The legal context for presenting art in public
- Things to think about when art is put up for sale or barter
- Laws and regulations that affect how artists live
- Legal basics, and how to make or change the law
