Ministero per i beni e le attività culturali,
08 April 2008, Italy

The decree signed on the 18 December 2007 by the Minister for Goods and Cultural Activities Francesco Rutelli, makes reading possible for people who are visually impaired thanks to new publications being transformed into a digital format.

As noted, while in its current paper format, a book is unable to be used by many disabled people, text files of its content make it, accessible to the blind, who can read it with their personal computer, to people who suffer from dyslexia, who can associate the written text with the readings from a synthetic voice, or to the visually impaired who can enlarge or contrast the characters, as well as in general for those who cannot flip through the pages of a book.

Italy is the first country that has decide to favourise the production of books in digital format, accessible to all.
