To facilitate our engagement with members and potential members in Africa, IFACCA is pleased to announce the African Arts Institute, led by Executive Director, Mike van Graan, as IFACCA’s part-time regional coordinator for Africa.
 
The IFACCA board endorsed the creation of this position as one of the key legacies from the 4th World Summit on Arts and Culture, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September 2009.
 
The position in Africa,  supported for a period of twelve months in the first instance, complements IFACCA’s two other part-time regional coordinator roles, established in Europe and Latin America for over 3 years. 
 
These regional coordinator positions actively support IFACCA’s engagement with its members and stakeholders; advise on key regional issues and members’ priorities; input into strategic planning; network, liaise and promote IFACCA services and activities; and play an important role on behalf of IFACCA in supporting our regional chapters.  These positions report to IFACCA’s Executive Director.
 
The African Arts Institute (AFAI) was launched in February 2009 with a two-year grant from Spier to establish an entity that would work in the creative sector across the continent.  A non-profit organisation based in Cape Town, the AFAI houses the secretariat of the Arterial Network, a continent-wide body of individuals, institutions, membership-based organisations and funding partners working to support the effectiveness and growth of an African arts and culture civil society. 
 
The AFAI's Executive Director, Mike van Graan, was Programme Director for IFACCA's 4th World Summit on Arts and Culture in Johannesburg, and is one of South Africa's leading playwrights, cultural activists and commentators. More information is available here: http://www.connectcp.org/MikeVanGraan
