Peña Nieto to design a cultural policy with intellectuals

In a private meeting with a group of intellectuals, President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto committed to designing a cultural policy together with them.

In order to hear the voices representing the broad and vital cultural sector of the country, the country's next president spoke with historians Miguel León-Portilla and Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, and the Director of ComArte, Lucina Jiménez López .

Other participants included the president of the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Sciences, Jorge Sánchez Sosa, composer Mario Lavista Camacho, physics and astronomer Julieta Fierro, the philosopher and poet Jaime Labastida Ochoa, and anthropologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma.
At the meeting, Peña Nieto recognized culture as an engine of economic development, and therefore reiterated his commitment to the promotion and the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage, which is the base of Mexico’s identity.

Accompanied by Aurelio Nuño, Education Coordinator, Maria Cristina García Cepeda, coordinator of Culture, and David López Gutiérrez, coordinator of Social Communication of his transition team, said that his administration will make full use of new communication technologies.

The aim is to provide cultural content to schools, libraries and various cultural centers around the country.

Peña Nieto noted that the necessary reforms to boost the development of the film industry will be carried about, for their contribution to the economy and job creation, as well as for being the key to strengthening the presence of Mexican culture in Mexico and the world.
He also stated that priority is given to dialogue and exchange with the world through culture, to strengthen ties especially with Latin American countries, in addition to promoting multiculturalism and recognizing the value of Indigenous cultures of Mexico.

At the meeting held in the offices of President-elect, Miguel León-Portilla addressed issues of popular and Indigenous cultures, while Lucina Jiménez López spoke on creative industries and the private sector.

Jorge Sánchez Sosa talked about the film industry, while Rafael Tovar y de Teresa commented on the cultural dialogue between Mexico and the world.
Mario Lavista Camacho talked about aspects relevant to artistic and cultural education and creation, Julieta Fierro underlined the importance of new technologies in cultural development.

Jaime Labastida Ochoa spoke about the promotion of books and reading, while Eduardo Matos Moctezuma talked about preserving the artistic and cultural heritage.
