Study on the impact of the EU Prizes for culture

European Commission : Directorate-General for Education and Culture ,
01 March 2013, Belgium

The aim of the EU Prizes is to highlight excellence in a number of fields in order that artists, works or cultural and artistic achievements become known beyond national borders, thereby encouraging mobility and exchanges.
The Commission contracted research and consultancy company ECORYS to carry out an analysis of these prizes, in particular regarding their impact from various angles – on the winners, on the sectors in which each prize operates, on the audiences and on the wider European social and economic landscape. Also examined was the prestige and outreach of the prizes. In order to have a comprehensive overview, the analysis was conducted at different levels – EU, sectorial, individual and general public.

The findings show among others that all of the prizes address a need identified by the relevant sector and are considered high quality. Furthermore, they are distinctive in their focus, and all have a strong degree of complementarity with components of wider EU culture policy. Benefits to the laureates include increased national and international exposure, more work opportunities and wider networks. Among the general public, the awards have a low profile, so their impact to raise visibility of each of the sectors or a specific issue is limited. The authors of the study also make recommendations for each prize.
