Consultation - Future of National Cultural Indicators

Attorney-General's Department, Ministry for the Arts,
28 February 2014, Australia

You are invited to participate in an Australia-wide consultation on the value and future development of a set of national cultural indicators.

Vital Signs is the first attempt to identify a set of high level cultural indicators for Australia. It was developed by the Statistics Working Group of the Meeting of Cultural Ministers and released for discussion purposes.

The Vital Signs indicators are based on a framework for measuring the value of the arts and cultural sector in terms of its contribution to economic prosperity, cultural vitality and social well-being.

Suggested indicators include:

  • Economic value measured by cultural employment and expenditure on cultural goods and activities;
  • Cultural value measured by innovation and cultural identity; and
  • Social value measured by access and participation.

For more information including the full report, fact sheet and Power Point presentation visit the Vital Signs website.

The Statistics Working Group is considering revising and updating Vital Signs, and is seeking the views of researchers, and people engaged and/or with an interest in the arts and cultural sector.

We would like to know your views on:

  • the need for a set of national cultural indicators;
  • the appropriateness of the 3-themed framework; and
  • whether the suggested indicators are the best measures of the value of the cultural sector.

To contribute to the consultation on Vital Signs, we ask that you take part in an online survey. The survey will be open until 17 March 2014 and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
