The launch of two Community Arts and Culture Nodes in Jurong and Tampines Regional Libraries, a partnership between the National Arts Council (NAC) and the National Library Board (NLB), was announced today by Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth. The community nodes will enable residents to enjoy an exciting line-up of year-round arts programmes such as performances, workshops and arts projects by the community.

These two community nodes are part of NAC’s plan to have more than 10 nodes by the end of this year. This is in line with plans to have 25 community nodes islandwide by 2025. Close to 2,300 activities will be offered across the different nodes for Singaporeans to participate over the next three years. The Community Arts and Culture Nodes are centres of activity which provide greater access to the arts through regular quality arts programmes in neighbourhoods. An initiative under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth’s Community Engagement Masterplan, the nodes aim to fulfil the vision of the Arts and Culture Strategic Review of providing opportunities for residents, artists and arts hobby groups to bond over their arts interests.

Mr Wong says: “We want the arts to be accessible to all Singaporeans. The Community Arts and Culture Nodes will form a nationwide network that will bring the arts closer to where we all live, with its wide array of activities. Residents and the community arts groups can interact, learn and participate in quality arts performances, workshops and other activities. As all these become a part of our everyday lives, I hope Singaporeans will be able to find more opportunities to pursue and sustain their passion for the arts, towards a more fulfilling life.”

 Ms Chua Ai Liang, Director of Arts & Communities, NAC, says: “NAC has set up three community nodes with our partners in Siglap South and Kallang Community Clubs in 2012, and in Woodlands Regional Library last year. These spaces have deepened arts engagement among residents through bite-sized educational arts programmes and a rich mix of performances, from opera to puppetry. We hope to integrate arts into various aspects of living, strengthen community bonds, while creating a colourful and enriching arts scene in the neighbourhoods.”
