The new law seeks to protect the remuneration of creators of audiovisual works and thus equate the sector with theater and music sectors.

The legal body seeks to protect the remuneration of creators of audiovisual works and thus equate the sector with theater and music sectors.
This afternoon, in the Patio de Las Camelias de la Moneda, the President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, and the Minister of Culture, Claudia Barattini signed the bill that enshrines rights of audiovisual authors to be discussed in the Congress.

At the ceremony, the President of the Republic Michelle Bachelet stressed the importance of fulfilling a commitment required from her Government. In this regard, the President noted that "we know that it is the task of the state to adequately protect our cultural heritage, but it is also the task of the State to promote and enhance the value of that creation and this means recognizing the rights of those who make possible that creation ".

Minister Barattini said that "as a Council we have decided to support this project, because it is a step in the process of giving audiovisual managers the same rights and benefits as other artists. This law collects the views and proposals of directors, writers and managers who have worked tirelessly in the defense of their sector ".
Director Andrés Wood, present at the event, said this means "a right that we have been waiting for. Many countries have it, in fact, we have often received copyright our films have been showed in other countries. We are very happy and grateful that the law is being prepared so promptly. "

Currently, the collection of copyright for creators of film, theater and television is uneven. This is because both musicians (through SCD) and actors (through Chileactores), managed to establish by a law a system of charging royalties. This situation has not been equalized in the case of directors and screenwriters.

This situation has led the National Society of Authors of Theater, Film and Media (ATN) direct its efforts in the same direction, promoting the development of a proposed bill that protects these rights. The purpose of the legal body is to protect the remuneration of the authors of audiovisual works.
It is important to emphasize that the draft bill that the President of the Republic signed today intends to correct the current asymmetry, as the Law 20.243 grants copyright to musicians and actors, excluding the audiovisual sector.

The new proposal is identical to the current law 20.243, only this time with an additional article that applies to directors and screenwriters of audiovisual works on equal terms. The payment of compensation shall be made through the society that represents them and the amount will be established in accordance with Article 100 of Law No. 17.336.
