The exhibition currently on view at the Tartu Art Museum has brought a very serious statement to the Minister's desk from the Estonian Jewish community. In it, representatives of the community express their deep displeasure and shock regarding the artistic interpretation of the Holocaust and its terrible tragedy against humanity in the exhibition "My Poland. On Recalling and Forgetting." The reaction and ensuing debate in society brought on by the exhibition lead us to repeatedly ask where the boundaries of art lie.
I hope that the Tartu Art Museum takes the opinion expressed by the Jewish community very seriously and decides whether, given today's context, the videos presented as part of the exhibition have exceeded the boundaries of contemporary art. For me personally, this seems to be a matter concerning the ability to empathise. Tomorrow [11.02.2015] I have a meeting scheduled with representatives of the Jewish community in Estonia, led by Mrs. Alla Jakobson, in order to discuss these issues openly.
