IFACCA invites support for the .Music domain community-based initiative

IFACCA,
27 August 2015, International

IFACCA is pleased to announce that the .MUSIC domain community-based initiative that IFACCA has been supporting (and on which it has been given a permanent board member position, (see http://music.us/board), is close to final approval by ICANN, the governing body of the Internet and needs public support.

DotMusic's application to secure the rights for the .MUSIC top-level domain name is now under evaluation by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) to determine whether the .MUSIC Initiative meets the ‘Community criteria’ to secure the rights for .MUSIC under a multi-stakeholder governance model. The evaluation is expected to take between three to five months.

This critical digital initiative for the arts is supported by over 100 relevant organizations with members representing over 95% of music consumed globally (See http://music.us/supporters), making this the largest coalition of organizations ever assembled to support a music/art cause.

Apart from IFACCA, the relevant organizations include: IFPI, RIAA, FIM, ICMP, NMPA, IAMIC, ISME, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, AIM, MERLIN, NAMM, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, NSAI, The Recording Academy, UK Music, BPI, JMI, IMI, IPRS, NARIP, PPL, HFA, WME, GEMA, BVMI, Future of Music Coalition, SOCAN, IMMF, MMF, Reverbnation, Tunecore/Believe, CDBaby, BFM/TheOrchard, LyricFind, SonicBids, Altafonte, League of American Orchestras, BMAT, INDMusic,CMRRA, CIMA, StoryAmp, Americana Music, AIR, ABMI, ARC, IMNZ, PledgeMusic, NWC, BureauExport|French Music, WAM, MusicBC, Music Austria, Manitoba Music, Music:LX, Francophonie Diffusion, TommyBoy, Alberta Music, Pleimo, Music Centre Slovakia, TheSyndicate, QMusic, MusicNT, MusicVictoria, MusicSA, Music SW, MusiqueNB, Broadjam, AMAEI, MusicXray, MusicNovaScotia, MusicKickup, BMA, Bandzoogle, WiseBand, Nimbit, MusicTasmania, CMW, MusicJustMusic, Heaven11, ProPlay, Dart, Dot Tickets,  Spoonz Music Group, Redeye, OurStage, MusiekCentrum, Conductors Guild, Discmakers, MusicBrainz, A&R Worldwide, NewMusicSeminar, MusicStory, SFMusicTech, IKON, CMJ, AudioMicro, OneRPM, Planetary, Marcato, iMusicianDigital, Horus, SyncExchange, Music Registry, IRMA, Music Matters, NUE Agency, Music Services Asia, MMNY, Hacate, YouBloom and many others.

DotMusic’s music-tailored policies were created with the community's input and are aligned with a mission that follows unified, coherent ideals that the entire Community subscribes to, such as:

•creating a trusted identifier and safe haven for music consumption;

•protecting musicians’ rights and intellectual property;

•fighting copyright infringement/piracy;

•supporting fair compensation and music education; and

•following a multi-stakeholder approach of representation of all types of global legitimate music constituents

If DotMusic does not pass the community criteria, the .MUSIC domain would be sold to the highest bidder at auction. In that scenario, it is likely that the domain would be bought by a commercial operator (such as a publicly-traded corporation, Google, Amazon or venture capital investment firm).  However, such entities do not have the same music-tailored safeguards to protect the community. This is not the desired result for the artistic community since such entities lack the multi-stakeholder governance structure of a community-based application (See http://music.us/comparison for a comparison of all .MUSIC applicant).
