Arts Council England has invested £15,000 from the National Lottery, allowing Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature to appoint a Young Poet Laureate for the first time.

Open to all poets aged between 18-30, who are living, working or studying in Nottingham, the scheme will highlight the literary talent of local individuals and the importance of poetry to the city.

The new Young Poet Laureate will be given a 16 month paid position, which includes opportunities to represent the City of Literature on a national platform as well as produce poetry and live performances.

Arts Council England is supporting the plans with £15,000 investment from the National Lottery, through the Grants for the Arts funding programme. This funding will help create more opportunities for people in Nottingham to enjoy great literature.  

Peter Knott, Area Director, Arts Council England said: “Every young person should have the opportunity to express themselves and poetry is a powerful way for us to share stories which are important. It will be great to see the Young Poet Laureate celebrate emerging writers in Nottingham and give confidence and inspiration to the next generation of poets. Good luck to everyone applying!”

The winner will be announced on National Poetry Day, Thursday 28 September.
