We have undertaken several projects to encourage policy makers, researchers and practitioners to share information about arts and education: from a Mini Summit on Arts and Education, to participation in international seminars and collaborative research on the impact of arts programmes on the education of children and young people.

Arts and Education Research

In 2004 we partnered with Professor Anne Bamford and the Australia Council for the Arts to conduct the first international analysis of arts education research for UNESCO, with a view to creating an international compendium of arts education research. This project grew out of our D’Art Programme, which harnesses the expertise of the IFACCA network to explore and consolidate international knowledge on arts and cultural policy to create publically available reports. In October 2004 we distributed our nineteenth D’Art question, which sought to find arts and education experts around the world; later that year we issued a survey questionnaire to nominated experts. In April 2005, we published an interim report on the D’Art topic entitled  Arts and Education Research: Towards an International Compendium. Following the publication of our interim report, Professor Bamford developed the findings and conducted further analysis. In 2006 she published The Wow Factor: Global research compendium on the impact of the arts in education (Waxmann Publishing), which demonstrated the impact of arts-rich educational programmes on children and young people around the world. Bamford presents representative case studies, analyses wide-ranging data, and draws together observations to provide an overview and comparison of existing programmes. Among the report’s main findings, Bamford found that there was a need for more training for providers of arts education and that quality arts education tended to be characterised by strong partnership between schools and external arts and community organisations. The publication is available in Spanish, Korean, Norwegian and German, and can be ordered online from the publisher.

Education and the Arts: a mini summit

The Education and the Arts mini-summit was held in Melbourne in September 2005. The event was part of the project to produce a global compendium on arts and education research,a joint initiative between IFACCA, UNESCO and the Australia Council for the Arts. The event was co-hosted by the Australia Council for the Arts and Arts Victoria, and attended by delegates from 16 countries.
