The Australian Ballet is the nation’s flagship ballet company. Comprising 72 dancers, it gives more than 180 performances each year in Australia and internationally, based on a diverse repertoire built on the tradition of classical ballet and the best of contemporary ballet. The Board of The Australian Ballet seeks to appoint a new General Manager to replace Ian McRae who has announced he will stand down from the role in July 2002. The successful candidate will work closely with the Artistic Director, implementing a business vision, mission and goals. The General Manager has responsibility for managing the resources within the company necessary to achieve its marketing, development and communications, administration and finance, and also works closely with the leadership team at The Australian Ballet School. The General Manager provides the critical interface with a variety of major stakeholders including major funding and policy bodies, corporate sponsors and support groups as well as servicing the needs of the ballet audience. He or she is responsible for ensuing the ongoing commercial and financial viability of the company through the development and implementation of appropriate business plans. The ideal candidate will have experience working successfully with a major Australian arts organisation or will be able to demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of the arts environment. The challenge is one of combining top quality management skills with an understanding of, and empathy for, the underlying artistic goals and core values of a most successful arts organisation. This is an exciting opportunity for an exception general management executive whose background will reflect the capacity to assume a significant management and leadership role in a challenging and high profile environment. The position is based in Melbourne and involves considerable travel.
