Campaigning for culture

The National Campaign for the Arts (NCA) and the Museums Association did their fair share of campaigning in the lead-up to elections in Scotland and Wales on May 1. The organisations collaborated to produce a ten-point cultural manifesto for each country, which recommended that culture should become a higher priority for the Scottish Executive and the Welsh National assembly. The Scottish Cultural Manifesto calls on the Ministry for Tourism, Culture and Sport to develop its advocacy role to ensure that culture becomes a higher priority. The Welsh Cultural Manifesto acknowledges that the Wales Assembly Government has recognised the importance of culture through the publication of its cultural strategy and budget increases to the Arts Council, but argues that the sector will need additional support ‘if culture in Wales is to flourish’. Jackie Clayton, Campaigns Manager for NCA, said the organisation had been lobbying all Welsh candidates on the issue of culture and the arts. ‘We have had some very positive feedback, including praise from Jenny Randerson, Welsh Culture Minister,’ she said.
