Indian Culture Department proposes private service for upkeep of monuments

Indian Tourism and Culture Minister Shri Jagmohan has revealed plans to established a separate professional service that would assist the country’s Archaeological Survey (ASI) in the upkeep of monuments. Until then Minister Jagmohan said district officers would work to preserve monuments and other local objects of cultural heritage. The Minister urged all district officers to clear areas around local monuments and to launch immediate prosecution against vandals. In addition, Minister Jagmohan instructed the ASI to amend its law to ensure stricter punishment for those who damage monuments. The Minister said the ASI would come under review so as to make for greater efficiency and to ensure the continued use of scientific technology in monument conservation.
