UNESCO and Catalonia sign memorandum for developing culture

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, and the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Spain, Mr Jordi Pujol, signed a memorandum this month aimed at developing and strengthening ongoing cooperation in the fields of education, science, culture and communication. Matsuura said the memorandum will provide a formal framework for the long-standing 'fruitful cooperation' between UNESCO and Catalonia. He also spoke of the rich cultural heritage of Catalonia which possesses five sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, and welcomed the success of the UNESCO sponsored travelling exhibition which which will be presented in several countries over the next three years.
