Local policies for cultural diversity

UNESCO, UCLG and Barcelona City Council,
01 September 2006, Spain

The Division of Cultural Policies and Intercultural Dialogue of UNESCO commissioned a study on local policies for cultural diversity to the Institute for Culture - Barcelona City Council, as Chair of the Working Group on Culture of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). This study is now complete. The study points out that: (1) diversity is constitutive of culture; (2) it has manifold meanings -contents, actors or ethnic- that need to be made explicit in cultural planning; (3) local governments are including cultural diversity considerations in their local policies; and (4) cultural governance becomes a crucial priority for local policies. The full study (in English), as well as its executive summary (in English, French and Spanish) are now available online.
