Community Arts in Rural Settings

Canadian Cultural Observatory,

'Community Arts in Rural Settings' is adapted from Ontario Arts Council Executive Director John Brotman’s May 3, 2007 presentation at the Canadian Cultural Observatory's 'In Focus Speakers' Series Workshop' on 'Arts and Heritage in Rural Communities.'
Brotman argues that it is the melding of a sense of personal aspiration with civic pride that keeps people deeply engaged in the arts in their communities. He also proposes that nourishing local activity by frequently injecting the presence of local or outside professional artists into local work will go a long way in addressing the loneliness brought by a feeling of remoteness from the larger centres of culture.
