Secretaría de Estado de Cultura,
22 June 2009, República Dominicana

The Ministries of Culture (SEC) and Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARENA) signed a cooperation agreement in order to safeguard, protect and promote the cultural and natural heritage of the Dominican Republic.

The agreement initialed by the heads of the SEC and SEMARENA Jose Rafael Lantigua and Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal, respectively, "is to strengthen mechanisms for the custody and protection of cultural and natural heritage, within the Dominican nation."

"The signing of this agreement is an interest of President Leonel Fernández to work with a new culture of multi-institutional and multi-sectoral approaches to the preservation and conservation of all natural and cultural heritage of our country as protected areas including underwater" "said the Secretary of the Environment.

He said that these two portfolios have to work together to defend the values that are, in essence, "the heritage of our own identity."

Fernandez Mirabal said they have been working together on the issue of defense of La Isabela National Park and the Mirador del Oste, within whose area is the Engombe Palace, site of historic and cultural importance.

"We now agree with the Secretary of State for Culture, which since the first of July will begin the recovery work at Engombe Palace to become a major area of tourism," said Fernandez.
