IFACCA will take part in Hivos Conference “Creating Future for Arts and Culture in Latin America”

IFACCA,
29 September 2010, Costa Rica

Hivos, the Dutch non-governmental Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation, is organizing a regional event in Latin America, the Conference “Creating Future for Arts and Culture in Latin America” that will take place in Santo Domingo de Heredia, Costa Rica, on 20-22 October 2010.

International guests, including Hivos’ counterpart organizations in the region, other organizations that have related interests in the promotion of culture, some international cooperation colleagues and international experts on the key areas described below, will take part at the Conference.

IFACCA will be represented at the Conference by Santiago Jara, its Regional Coordinator for Latin America. He will share IFACCA’s experience assisting Latin American arts and culture funding agencies with information and research resources and its current activities and projects.

This event follows two preceding conferences of similar scope that Hivos organized in previous years in Africa (Isla de Goree, Senegal, March 2007) and Asia (Bangalore, India, December 2008). Hivos invited counterpart organizations and experts on arts and culture to debate on the fundamental issues that impact the arts in the region. Both conferences were successful and lead to work platforms that are still alive. This exercise will now be carried out in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Its objectives are: to identify, analyse and reflect on the new challenges that arts and culture face in Latin America, in order to explore new possible roles for cultural organizations; to identify common difficulties or obstacles, in order to come up with formulas to overcome them, based on good practice and knowledge exchange; and to foster the creation of novel ideas for possible future projects, policies and collaborations for artists, cultural administrators and people in charge of cultural cooperation.

The key subjects of the Conference will be: the emerging role of arts and culture in Latin America and of the new and emerging art forms/themes; sustainability, strategies and solutions: the entrepreneurial spirit in arts and culture; and building capacities in arts and culture: networks, training opportunities and best practices.

Shortly, a blog leading up to the Conference, where participants will be able to exchange information and debate on the key subjects, will be launched.
