Survey on arts and children with a disability

VSA,
09 March 2011, USA

Professor Anne Bamford has asked IFACCA to distribute the following survey on behalf of VSA, the International Organization on Arts and Disability, regarding a mapping project on organisations that focus on arts education and/or disability.

Since beginning in 1974, the VSA, in association with the John F Kennedy Center for Performing Arts has been highly successful in expanding the accessibility of the arts for people with disability. A key feature of this expansion has been the development of a network of national and international affiliate organisations.

The VSA is currently seeking a more comprehensive picture of the organizations and initiatives, based outside of the U.S. and/or international in scope that include a focus on arts education and/or disability. In some countries, there are specialist organisations to ensure accessibility to the arts and culture for children and young people with disabilities. In other countries, general programmes include a substantial focus on an integrated approach to ensure the arts are accessible to all.

This detailed mapping will gather evidence and intelligence in order to inform future decision making and policy for arts education for children with disabilities and will give insight into key issues and opportunities and highlight quality practice and innovations.

The survey and research is being conducted by Professor James Catterall of UCLA and Professor Anne Bamford of the University of the Arts, London, both of whom have long standing commitments to the vital place of the arts in the lives of children with disabilities – children who may stand to benefit most by arts-based ways of understanding and expression, both in their cognitive contributions and as ways of making learning (and teaching) more motivating and enjoyable.

The survey is available, in English, French and Spanish.
