National Library To Provide Platform For E-book Industry

The National Library (PNM) is looking into providing a special platform to make e-book borrowing more accessible to the public.

Its director-general, Datuk Raslin Abu Bakar, said in view that the e-book industry was still new in Malaysia, PNM, as the provider of the country's knowledge and information, would have to the take the necessary steps.

"By having the platform, it will also directly helps e-book writers and publishers to manage and expand their works," he told Bernama here Monday.

However, Raslin, said the matter had to be looked into thoroughly because it involved several matters, including copyrights.

"The e-books published by the private sector or certain writers normally have copyrights and that we have to negotiate first before the platform can be used," he added.

So far, he said, PNM had two huge collections of e-book, comprising publications subscribed through local and foreign publishers.
