Culture is the fourth pillar of sustainable development: Valerie Magar

Acknowledging that culture is the fourth pillar of sustainable development, creating indicators to recognise the impact of protecting world heritage and implementing UNESCO’s legal instruments are  UNESCO’s goals for Latin America, noted Valerie Magar, Head of the department for Conversation of National Cultural Heritage at the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

This was the message of her presentation ‘Reflections on the UNESCO Conventions in Latin America’, given at the meeting ‘UNESCO Conventions: the Latin American Perspective’ held on Friday 25 October in the José Luis Sánchez Bribiesca de la Torre de Ingeniería at the City University of Mexico.

The presentation began with Magar mentioning several UNESCO conventions based on the themes of World Heritage, including those that were highlighted by the Hague Convention that instil the importance of protecting the heritage of every nation. 

She also mentioned the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, discussing the separation between tangible and intangible heritage and its safeguarding, addressing the protection of customs and traditions, and emphasising the necessity for new ideas and mechanisms in promoting and maintaining cultural expression and diversity.
