Sámi literature, reading lists and Nordic ministers

Swedish Arts Council,
28 May 2024, Sweden

This year, the Gothenburg Book Fair celebrates its 40th anniversary, and the Swedish Arts Council is there. We participate with seminars on reading lists, the Sami literary miracle and reveal who is the whole country's new reading ambassador. Together with the Swedish National Agency for Education, we invite the Nordic ministers for culture and education to a conversation about children's and young people's reading – now it's time for reading in the Nordic Region!

This year's themes at the Gothenburg Book Fair are space and Sápmi. On the Sámi stage, we participate with a conversation about the young Sámi literary wonder. The Swedish National Agency for Education has been commissioned to produce reading lists for schools with the support of the Swedish Arts Council, and at the fair we will investigate whether the reading lists are the solution to the reading crisis.

This year, Sweden holds the presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers. Part of this work is the seminar Reading so into the Nordic countries!, about children's and young people's reading in school and in their spare time, which we are organising together with the Swedish National Agency for Education. From Sweden, Minister of Culture Parisa Liljestrand and Minister of Education Lotta Edholm will participate.

The Australian organisation Indigenous Literacy Foundation, this year's winner of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, is participating with its own seminar. The 2020 laureate, Baek Heena, author and illustrator, participates in several conversations.

In addition to the Book Fair celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the Swedish Arts Council celebrates its 50th anniversary, the Children and Young People's Book Catalogue its 25th anniversary, and both Bokstart and Creative Europe celebrate its 10th anniversary. We celebrate these birthdays in our stand program.

Later on, we will tell you more about our seminars, our program on the other stages and about all the fun things that happen in our stand.

See you at the Book Fair in Gothenburg 26-29 September!
