In its report, the State of Artistic Freedom 2024, Freemuse gives an overview of that turbulent year. In chapters on the Sudan and Gaza conflicts and the impact on arts and culture in these war zones, it remembers the artists among the many civilians killed under bombardment. It describes the unprecedented freedom of expression crisis that has arisen in Germany, the UK and the USA, as artists who called for a ceasefire found themselves blacklisted, their artworks withdrawn from exhibitions, sacked from their posts and arts premises attacked.
