On 21 October 2025, the Ministry of Culture organised a public consultation on the Green Transition in Culture, Challenges for the Future. The consultation was introductory by the Minister of Culture, Dr Asta Vrečko, and the State Secretary at the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy (MOPE), Uroš Vajgl. They emphasised cooperation between the two sectors in the field of climate protection.
In the introductory part of the public consultation, the participants shared their experiences with the pilot public tender for the green transition in culture, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Culture (MK) with funds from the Climate Fund of the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy.
The public discussion was followed by the director of the Božidar Jakac Gallery, Goran Milovanović, the director of the Velenje Festival, Barbara Pokorny, the director of the Museum of Architecture and Design, Maja Vardjan, and the head of the Centre for the Promotion of Cooperation in the Cultural and Creative Sectors of Motovil, Mateja Lazar. The consultation was connected by the director of the Institute for the Organization and Implementation of Cultural Events, Bunker mag. Alma Redžić Selimović.
At the same time, the Minister of Culture, Dr Asta Vrečko, said: "At the Ministry of Culture, we have set ourselves the goal of including culture in all departments and encouraging the green transition and the creation of sustainable policies in culture. I believe that sustainable thinking will keep us on this planet, that we will be able to overcome the crises in which we find ourselves in the modern world. The climate and cultural sectors are allies here. The Ministry of Culture is renovating public cultural infrastructure and carrying out energy rehabilitation worth EUR 17.5 million, we have also published a Green Transition in Culture tender worth EUR 600,000, followed by a new tender worth EUR 1.8 million for projects until 2028. The advantage of culture is that it is easier to reach people, show a different way of thinking, innovative ideas and good practices, and care for the environment. The cooperation between the two ministries shows that we are stronger and better and that we achieve more when we work together. Green and cultural policies are interconnected, and above all, we need to work on awareness-raising, education and cultural and artistic education."
MOPE State Secretary Uroš Vajgl stressed: "When we talk about the climate crisis, we are talking about measures that are taking place in many sectors. We are at a stage where the "green transition" is no longer a technical challenge, but requires changes in our daily lives. Due to its geographical location, Slovenia is exposed to climate change above average, which is why it is necessary to react quickly with regard to the consequences of climate change. We believe that culture is not a marginal climate policy, but its foundation. It is also the culture that says that change is not a threat, but an opportunity. At MOPE, we are pleased that together with the Ministry of Culture we were able to prepare a Public Tender for the Green Transition. Also in light of the tendency to intensify efforts to promote sustainability."
Between 2024 and 2026, the Ministry of Culture is piloting the greening of 14 festivals and organisations with a total value of €0.6 million through a public tender. At the event, the Ministry of Culture announced that EUR 1.8 million will be available for projects until 2028 through a public tender for the green transition in culture from the Climate Fund funds at the end of the year. The call will be aimed at greening festivals and smaller cultural events and raising awareness.
