Together with our co-hosts, the Swedish Arts Council, we have been working further to prepare for the 9th World Summit on Arts and Culture on Safeguarding Artistic Freedom in Stockholm this May. We warmly welcome artists, cultural professionals, representatives from government, non-cultural sectors and wider civil society at the Summit.
It is now only three and a half months until the 9th World Summit on Arts and Culture in Stockholm, Sweden from 3-5 May 2023 that will address artistic freedom as a fundamental pillar of cultural policy and examine how we can – and why we should – safeguard artistic freedom.
Artistic and cultural expressions are fundamental to our collective human experience. They create space for us to reflect on ourselves and our societies; to connect with different perspectives; to understand and learn from each other; to test and contest ideas; and ultimately, to inspire us to imagine new paths to individual, collective, and social development.
The important role of culture and the arts in post-pandemic recovery and socio-economic development has been firmly in focus, especially in regional gatherings in many parts of the world.
The UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development - MONDIACULT 2022 concluded in Mexico City on 30 September with an ambitious Declaration for Culture that explicitly acknowledged culture as a global public good, with an intrinsic value to enable and drive sustainable development.
