ACORNS 360: The Music Special

02 March 2017, International

This week we have music on our minds, courtesy of our latest adventures in news-gathering. Since our last excursion, the Arts Council of Ireland - An Chomhairle Ealaíon has announced a new opera policy and strategy; in Wales a new National Endowment for Music has been established; in Estonia the government and citizen donors have joined forces to support a new initiative that boosts music education – An Instrument for Every Child; Iraqi composer and oud virtuoso Naseer Shamma has been named a UNESCO Artist for Peace; and researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Exeter have found that listening to music can improve unconscious attitudes towards other cultures.

The news doesn’t stop there. At a more local level, a recent Forbes article has looked at how cities might bring together music communities and tech entrepreneurs to create a Silicon Valley for music; the City of Sydney has published an update report on the work it is doing to fund, advocate and reform policies for live music and performance; and UNESCO has opened a call for applications for the Creative Cities Network, giving cities the opportunity to put themselves on the UCCN music map. For those working in music policy and programmes, Sound Diplomacy have also announced details for the Music Cities Convention in Memphis this October, which will bring together leaders from across government and the sector to discuss how to improve urban planning, policies and development strategies through music.
