Welcome to the first edition of ACORNS for 2022. On behalf of the IFACCA Board and Secretariat we wish you all the best for the new year. We remain committed to working with the international community on critical matters affecting and impacting the cultural and creatives sectors.
Since the last edition, together with co-hosts Swedish Arts Council, we have been working further on the programme development and engaging the many participants that will have a speaking role in the 9th World Summit on Arts and Culture. Our diverse participants bring their own experience and ideas to the Summit theme of artistic freedom.
Pioneering artist, photojournalist, educator and social activist Shahidul Alam will open the Summit with a robust conversation about artistic freedom in an age of complexity. After obtaining a PhD in chemistry Shahidul turned his hand to photography in 1983, with the struggle for democracy in Bangladesh a preferred subject matter. His work continues to straddle the artistic and social; with exhibition credits at MOMA, Centre Pompidou and Tate Modern, alongside chairing the international jury of World Press Photo, introducing email technology to Bangladesh and being arrested for criticising his government in 2018.
The notion of complexities, experiences and contexts will carry through the programme, including insights from Svetlana Mintcheva from the National Coalition Against Censorship (USA), whose work focuses on the impact of censorship on artistic freedom. As co-editor of Censoring Culture: Contemporary threats to free expression (The New Press, 2006) and Curating Under Pressure: International perspectives on negotiating conflict and upholding integrity (Routledge, 2020), Svetlana is at the forefront of emerging trends in censorship.
The many pressures on artists who are frontline defenders demanding accountability from State institutions will be explored by Colectivo LASTESIS, the feminist collective from Valparaíso, Chile. Founded by Daffne Valdés Vargas, Paula Cometa Stange, Lea Cáceres Díaz and Sibila Sotomayor Van Rysseghem, they became widely known in 2019 through the song, A Rapist in Your Path, which emerged as an anthem for women’s rights across the globe. Named by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of 2020, they will throw light on the effects of social movements and the pandemic on artistic freedoms.
Political persecution and the role of the international community – a key matter for artistic freedom – will be taken up by International Cities of Refuge Network’s Helge Lunde. Mr Lunde founded ICORN to bring together cities and regions offering shelter to writers and artists at risk, while advancing freedom of expression and defending democratic values. The role these 76 locations play is fundamental to artistic freedom, giving creators and human rights defenders a place to freely express themselves where they are safe, but not silent.
The lived experience of locating and resettling into such a haven will be shared by Dr Ahmad Naser Sarmast, the Founder and Director of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, who successfully evacuated his community recently and is currently reconstituting the institute in Portugal. A visionary cultural leader and a strong advocate for the empowerment of women and girls through music, Dr Sarmast will speak to the urgent need for international safe spaces in the face of life-threatening risks to the freedom of educators and artists who are female, particularly after the return of the Taliban to power.
The highly complex impact of gatekeepers’ decision-making processes on the social and economic conditions needed for artistic freedoms to thrive will be interrogated by Nicholas Moyo, Executive Director of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe. An artist, educator and seasoned arts administrator, Mr Moyo has led several projects in Zimbabwe as director, producer and administrator; he has also been instrumental in the establishment of many arts festivals in Zimbabwe.
And cultural erasure will be central to the conversation with Marc Bamuthi Joseph from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, who will provoke and guide us through a complexity of issues in the context of the USA. A 2017 TED Global Fellow, an inaugural recipient of the Guggenheim Social Practice Initiative, and an honoree of the United States Artists Rockefeller Fellowship, Mr Joseph raises awareness of the issue of cultural erasure and its impact on artistic freedom through performances that range from opera to film.

Bienvenidos a la primera edición de ACORNS en 2022. En nombre del Secretariado y la Junta de IFACCA, le deseamos un felicísimo año nuevo, en el que continuaremos con nuestro compromiso de trabajar con la comunidad internacional en los asuntos fundamentales que influyen y repercuten en los sectores cultural y creativo.
Desde la última edición de ACORNS hemos estado trabajando con el Consejo de las Artes de Suecia, coorganizador de la 9ª Cumbre Mundial, en la elaboración del programa y en los contactos con las y los diversos participantes que tendrán intervenciones en la Cumbre. Cada uno de ellos aporta su propia experiencia e ideas sobre el tema de la cumbre, la libertad artística.
El artista de vanguardia, fotoperiodista, educador, y activista social Shahidul Alaminaugurará la cumbre con una sólida conversación sobre la libertad artística en la era de la complejidad. Tras doctorarse en Ciencias Químicas, Shahidul se empezó a dedicar a la fotografía en 1983, con el movimiento por la democracia en Bangladesh como tema principal. Su trabajo continúa combinando lo artístico con lo social y ha expuesto en el MOMA, el Centro Pompidou y la Tate Modern, además de presidir el jurado internacional del World Press Photo. También ha llevado el correo electrónico a Bangladesh y fue arrestado por criticar a su gobierno en 2018.

Fundado por Daffne Valdé Daffne Valdés Vargas, Paula Cometa Stange, Lea Cáceres Díaz y Sibila Sotomayor Van Rysseghem, el colectivo se dio a conocer con la canción Un violador en tu camino, que se ha convertido en un himno por los derechos de las mujeres en todo el mundo. Elegidas por la revista Time entre las 100 personas más influyentes de 2020, LASTESIS ilustrará los efectos de los movimientos sociales y la pandemia en las libertades artísticas.
El papel de la comunidad internacional en las persecuciones políticas, un aspecto clave para la libertad artística, será un tema analizado por Helge Lunde, de la Red Internacional de Ciudades Refugio (ICORN). El Sr. Lunde fundó ICORN para reunir a las ciudades y regiones que ofrecen refugio a artistas y escritores amenazados, y promueven así la libertad de expresión y la defensa de los valores democráticos. El papel que desempeñan estas 76 localidades es fundamental para la libertad artística, al ofrecer a creadores y activistas por los derechos humanos un lugar en el que poderse expresar en condiciones de seguridad.
El doctor en Musicología Ahmad Naser Sarmast compartirá su experiencia de evacuación y búsqueda de refugio. Fundador y director del Instituto Nacional de Música de Afganistán, consiguió salir del país recientemente y está reconstruyendo el Instituto en Portugal. Líder cultural de vanguardia y gran activista por el empoderamiento de las mujeres y las niñas mediante la música, el Dr. Sarmast hablará sobre la urgente necesidad de habilitar espacios seguros internacionalmente para proteger a las educadoras y artistas cuya vida está en riesgo, como acontece en Afganistán tras el retorno de los talibanes al poder.
Los complejos efectos de los guardianes en los procesos de toma de decisiones políticas referentes a las condiciones sociales y económicas necesarias para que puedan prosperar las libertades artísticas será un tema analizado por Nicholas Moyo, director ejecutivo del Consejo Nacional de las Artes de Zimbabue. Artista, educador y experimentado gestor artístico, el Sr. Moyo ha dirigido diversos proyectos en Zimbabue en calidad de director, productor y administrador, y ha tenido un papel instrumental en la creación de muchos festivales artísticos en el país.
El borrado cultural será un tema central en la conversación con Marc Bamuthi Joseph, del Centro de Artes Escénicas John F. Kennedy, quien nos provocará y nos orientará en las complejidades de diversos problemas en el contexto de los Estados Unidos. Becario TED Global en 2017, beneficiario de la primera Iniciativa de Práctica Social del Guggenheim y del programa Rockefeller para artistas en los Estados Unidos, el Sr. Joseph dará a conocer el problema del borrado cultural y sus efectos en la libertad artística a través de representaciones en disciplinas como la ópera y el cine.

Finalmente, una nota sobre la situación actual en la pandemia del COVID-19. La salud, la seguridad y el bienestar de todas y todos los participantes en la Cumbre es absolutamente prioritaria para IFACCA y el Consejo de las Artes de Suecia.
