The one-day conference Cultural Diversity and New Technologies takes place on July 2, in São Paulo, Brazil. Experts invited to the meeting will be discussing opportunities and challenges brought by new technologies to the development of policies in the cultural area. This one-day meeting is free of charge and will be open from 9 am to 6 pm in the Auditorium Professor Fadigas Fontes Torres at the CeTI-SP – Center of Information Technology of São Paulo at USP. Attendance requires registration through the e-mail <[email protected]> by June 22.
The event results from a partnership between the Center of Studies Society and Technology of the University of São Paulo (CEST-USP) and members of the group “U40”, a multidisciplinary network of experts in cultural diversity formed in 2009 thanks to the initiative of the German Commission for UNESCO.
The Cultural Diversity and New Technologies meeting aims at promoting the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
The UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of the Cultural Expressions, adopted in October 2005 and in effect since March 2007, currently has 139 Parties. Considered mainly as a response to the “trade and culture” debate and with a view to foster more balanced international exchanges of cultural products and services, the Convention aims at reaffirming the double nature (cultural and economic) of cultural products and services, legitimating cultural measures and policies, and promoting international cooperation in the cultural area.
The Cultural Diversity and New Technologies meeting will gather reflections of academic lecturers and practical experiences acquired from projects that associate the use of new technologies with objectives of cultural diversity. Among the subjects to be discussed are:
• The implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions in the digital era;
• Challenges and opportunities brought about by new technologies;
• New technologies and cultural creation;
• New technologies and access to cultural offer;
• New technologies, citizenship and democracy;
• Experiences of projects that promote cultural diversity through the use of new technologies, among others: Makerspace (OLABI), Mais Diferenças (More Differences), Vídeo nas Aldeias (Video in Indigenous Villages), My French Film Festival, and Pontos de Cultura (Culture Points).
