OEI,
02 April 2008, Costa Rica

The Minister of Education of Costa Rica, Leonardo Garnier, and the General Secretary of the Ibero-American States Organization for Education, Science and Culture (OEI), Álvaro Marchesi, will inaugurate in San José a meeting of ministers of Culture and Education of Ibero-American countries in order proceed with the program ‘Arts and Education, Culture and Citizenship’.

This program is an initiative of the OEI, supported by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI), which aims to strengthen the links between education and culture within the school systems and to build, as a result, a citizenship that takes into account and respects cultural diversity.

A group of experts on arts and education created within the OEI will also attend this meeting, March 24-26, organized by the Ministry of Education of Costa Rica. The group advises and assists the Organization in setting up the criteria for this project’s actions in the various countries where it is currently functioning.

‘Arts and Education, Culture and Citizenship’ forms part of OEI’s educational strategy. Among the members of the group of experts is José Antonio Abreu, creator of the Venezuelan movement of youth orchestras, who will not be able to attend this time. This group of experts is made up of twelve people from the academic world or from cultural and artistic institutions of high prestige.

During two days, the participants will deal with the initial actions to be taken in order to support the educational policies of the Ibero-American countries that focus on arts and education. The main purpose of OEI is to facilitate the introduction of this subject in the Ibero-American educational systems.

Some of the matters on which they will work are: teacher training models, arts teaching approaches, disciplines to be included in the curricula, and the amount of lesson hours.
