Appointment of 3 Commissioners - RCAHMS

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) collects, records and interprets information on the architectural, industrial, archaeological and maritime heritage of Scotland. The work of RCAHMS is overseen by a board comprising nine Commissioners and a Chairman who are responsible for ensuring that the conduct of RCAHMS is proper, efficient and in line with the highest standards of public service. Commissioners are appointed by Her Majesty The Queen, on the recommendation of the First Minister. Further information about RCAHMS is available at www.rcahms.gov.uk.

Appointments are for five years initially with the possibility of reappointment. A time commitment in the region of 2 days a month, generally in Edinburgh, is required. The successful candidate will take up the role from November 2009.

The appointments are not remunerated but travel and subsistence expenses are met. Reasonable dependent carer expenses will also be reimbursed.

The role involves:

• attending and contributing to Commission meetings 4 times a year and, at least one of the 6 Programme Committees twice a year
• contributing to the Commission’s corporate planning and policy determination process
• providing peer review of the Commission’s business

The successful candidates will have skills or experience in the following:

• A significant understanding of the built heritage of Scotland in archaeology, architectural history, or historical geography
• The ability to contribute to the overall policy development and strategic direction of RCAHMS
• The ability to represent the interests of and to promote RCAHMS at national, regional and local level
• At least one of the following: business/financial planning; management of archives; Information Technology; education/outreach activities; the use of Public Relations in organisational outreach
