The subject :
This course uses a value-based approach to the interaction between economic processes, the arts and culture. It includes an economic primer for those who want to know the basic economic principles.
The value based approach that this course covers is intended to anticipate, understand and deal with the big changes in the economy and in the cultural sector that are currently underway. The creative industries are about the production of meanings. What, then, is creativity? How to engender creative environments? The cultural sector is about meanings. Why then, is it running the risk of being marginalized? What could cultural leaders do differently to improve the standing of the arts and culture and increase the necessary support?
Program:
The course will consist of a series of interactive seminars, group discussions, a few workshops, an excursion and discussions with prominent cultural leaders in the Netherlands.
In this course participants will gain up to date knowledge about the functioning of cultural institutions, the creative industries, creativity, cultural policy and the new economy.
They will learn when and how economic thinking applies but they also will find out about the value based approach that stresses the role of values, and points out the different logics for the realization of values. This gets us to discuss the special characteristics of cultural goods, the mission of cultural organizations (and how difficult it is to articulate a good one), cultural entrepreneurship, creative ways of financing and alternative ways of evaluation.
The course stimulates interaction among the participants by way of a common project, personal reflection on one’s own values and purposes, and applications of the ideas presented. Each participant will have a chance to present his or her own project and will receive professional advice.
