Art, Community & Context - Considering the Terms of Engagement
28 April 2004 – 30 April 2004, Ireland
Art, Community & Context - Considering the Terms of Engagement
Using the Irish context as a lens to examine the relationship between arts provision - whether in galleries, institutions or arts centres - and community, this conference will interrogate the terms of engagement as articulated locally and more widely.
Can inherited models of provision and practice serve both artist and community, and does the idea of service best describe what contemporary provision seeks to do?
What part do the visual arts in Ireland play in the community? How have the arts been used in community development processes?
A leading sociologist will set the context of the conference, identifying issues in Dublin and Ireland, through which art has to negotiate its role. Delegates will hear the voices of artists, educators, curators, policy makers, community members and directors.
Speakers will include:
- Helen O'Donoghue IMMA
- Johanne Mullan IMMA
- Declan McGonagle City Arts Centre's Civil Arts Inquiry
- Mary Corcoran National University of Ireland, Maynooth
- Val Balance Aras Eanna Arts Centre
- Niall O'Baoil Fatima Groups United
- Nicola Henly & Collette McMahon Iniscrealtra Festival
- Alison Cox, Joleen Keizer, Tate Modern & Bridget Virden, community advocate
