Arts and Health Conference
24 June 2004 – 26 June 2004, Ireland
The Arts Council of Ireland has announced a three-day Arts and Health Conference.
Where: Dublin Castle
When: 24 - 26 June 2004
The conference, hosted by Mr John O'Donoghue, TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, will include four key note sessions encompassing the viewpoint of a scientist - Professor Semir Zeki, a neurobiologist based at University College, London; a philosopher - Dr Anthony Grayling, from Birkbeck College, University of London, a doctor - gerontologist Dr. John Zeisel, co-founder and president of Hearthstone Alzheimer Care and the Hearthstone Alzheimer's Family Foundation, USA; artists Paul Robertson, founding member of the internationally renowned Medici String Quartet, and presenter of the Channel 4 series, Music and the Mind and Mark Taylor, choreographer and Artistic Director of Dance Alloy, USA and teacher of contemporary dance.
Selected papers, presentations, interventions and workshops, many from Irish health practitioners, will illustrate the four conference themes, which are:
Narration and Time: How do we tell our stories?
Knowing Spaces: How do we shape our physical environment?
Sensing the Non-Visual: What are the non-visual ways of understanding the world?
Imagining the Body: What are the images and experiences that shape attitudes to the body?
Practical workshops will run parallel to the conference programme examining, amongst other challenges, good practice in artist employment, mainstreaming arts in health - including influencing policy - and developing partnerships and networks.
In addition, there will be two music workshops (one led by Paul Robertson and Philippe Bouteloup and the other by Elaine Agnew) and a dance workshop led by Mark Taylor co-hosted with the Association of Professional Dancers in Ireland.
There will also be specialist panel discussions and a series of special interactive artist iterventions.
