Challenging the Frame
03 November 2004 – 06 November 2004, Switzerland
Challenging the Frame is title of the Eighth Biennial Conference of the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA), to be held in Luzern, Switzerland, 3-6 November 2004.
The title of the conference reflects concerns and excitement around the European enlargement and inclusion, as well as the more obvious and literal relationship of the arts to other disciplines, and the developments and questioning of the boundaries of those disciplines themselves.
The frame is a signifier of inclusion and exclusion that relates as much to political and social geography as it does to the frame of a painting, a photograph or film, and to the stage.
The context for arts education, pedagogy and policy is also informed, and in many cases regulated, by the frame in terms of benchmarks, quality assurance processes, parity, and the curriculum itself.
Artists, academics and managers wrestle with these and other issues constantly and with varying degrees of complicity, indifference, enthusiasm, constructive questioning and, at times, rejection.
