Cultural Facilities: Catalysts for Territorial Development

16 November 2005 – 17 November 2005, France

The County Council of Val-de-Marne (Conseil general du Departement) will open its new museum of Modern Art on the 15 November. The first of its kind to open in the suburbs of Paris in dozens of years, the museum houses over 1000 pieces of contemporary art in France, from the 1950s to the present day. To mark the occasion, the Council is inviting global reflection on how a museum can be more than a public institution in the service of society - how a major public cultural facility can contribute to local and regional development. The International Urban Development Association have teamed with the Council to facilitate a 2 day international conference in Vitry-sur-Seine, for policymakers, economic and cultural institutions, development agencies to exchange ideas and experiences on these issues. The conference is to be held at Musee d'Art Contemporain from 16 to 17 November, and will focus on four main themes.
  • Territorial Development and Cultural projects
  • Factor for social cohesion and territorial
  • Economic promotion and cultural partnerships - can a museum be in instrument to the service of urban and regional promotion?
