Culture, Quality of Life and Globalisation

23 July 2002 – 27 July 2002, Spain

Culture, Quality of Life and Globalisation: Problems and Challenges for the New Millenium is the 17th Conference of the International Association for People-Environment Studies and will take place in Coruna, Spain, 23-27 July 2002. The IAPS conference is held every two years and is an international reference for research on the interaction between people and the environment. The latter half of the twentieth century saw an increasing tension between the forces of globalization as exemplified by international fast-food chains, ubiquitous architectural styles and the introduction of the euro currency on one hand, and efforts to ensure local and regional identitiy and distinctiveness throudh planning controls, sustainability philosophy and even war on the other. How will these tensions be resolved in the first decade of the 21st century? What will be the impact of global cultures on local cultures? The conference theme will focus on the tension between the local and the global culture as expressed and understood through research on architecture, design, planning, environmental sustainability, and all the other policy and practice areas where environment-behaviour researchers are active.
