How can we trace the origin and evolution of provincial and territorial cultural policy in Canada? How do Canadian provincial cultural policy approaches compare to international approaches? What are some of the key distinguishing characteristics of Canadian provincial cultural policy?
Monica Gattinger (University of Ottawa) is co-director with Diane Saint-Pierre (Institut national de la recherche scientifique) of a national research team tracing the origin and evolution of provincial and territorial cultural policy in Canada. This is the first comprehensive study of provincial cultural policy and administration and is being undertaken by a research team of some 20 researchers from a dozen universities across Canada. Monica will present the research program of which this study forms a part, and report on some of the key findings of the research, including how provincial approaches to cultural policy relate to international cultural policy approaches.
