The Second Annual Media and Cultural Studies Conference is entitled: Globalisation, Americanisation and Contemporary Popular Culture
When: 20-21 May 2004
Where: Goethe Institute, Istanbul, Turkey
Issues to be addressed include:
· the global and the local in popular culture
· non-American and/or non-Western influences on global culture
· new directions in the cultural imperialism debate
· postmodern culture & hyper-reality
· popular culture after “9-11”
· electronic communications and transnational networks in contemporary popular culture
· methodological approaches to the study of popular culture
· the role of economics in globalisation/Americanisation
· local, regional, national and/or transnational efforts to regulate the spread of globalisation/Americanisation
In addition to paper presentations, there will be a number of keynote speeches.

· David Morley, Professor of Communications, Goldsmiths College, University of London.
· Gunter H. Lenz, Professor of American Literary and Cultural Studies, Humboldt University, Berlin.
. Bo Reimer, Professor of Media and Culture Studies, University of Malmö, Sweden.
. Ayse Öncü, Professor, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Sabanci University, Istanbul.
