Following the success of the 2011 conference, Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) committed to delivering conferences for the Scottish museums sector biennially.
This year’s conference themes and content are being specifically developed with the sector’s needs and requirements in mind, drawing on the responses given through the consultation carried out in 2012.
Location: Hampden Park, Glasgow, Scotland
Date: Thursday 12 September 2013
Theme: “Fortune Favours the Brave” will centre around the theme of organisational sustainability. It will explore the wider themes of up-skilling museums’ staff and leaders, putting into place business-like practices, attracting investment, engaging audiences and forming lasting partnerships. Innovation and skills building will underpin all sessions at the conference. The conference will create opportunities for knowledge exchange between museums and galleries and other sectors.
Proposed sub-themes:
- ‘Getting our ducks in a row’ (business planning, effective governance and business transformation as a means of sustainability)
- ‘Strength in numbers’ (partnerships as a means to sustainability)
- ‘Show me the money’ (attracting sponsorship and funding into the sector)
- ‘Pulling in the punters’ (attracting visitors and increasing public impact and value)
Purpose: To offer a cost effective platform through which Scotland’s museums and galleries can network and engage with practical and relevant content, helping the sector to develop and work towards delivering against the National Strategy aims and objectives.
Programme: The day will consist of a mix of presentations, keynote and parallel sessions. We would welcome submissions from people outside the museum sector, keen to share knowledge relevant to the conference themes, as well as from those within the sector.
MGS welcomes contributions to the conference and has issued a call for papers – proposals should submitted by 5pm on Monday 15 April.
Conference tickets will be available to purchase from May 2013. For further details, visit http://www.museumsgalleriesscotland.org.uk/conference-2013/.
